How Do You Achieve Perfect Black & White Photography With Your DSLR.

by admin

dslr camera photoSo most of us have a DSLR camera that captures images in colour but how do achieve the best Black and white photo conversion. What works best to capture the perfect black and white photograph – filters, the camera B & W mode or photo editing software. Professional photographer Karl Taylor reveals all!

To understand black & white photography you first need to understand a little bit about colour. As you are probably already aware, the primary colours of light are red, green and blue. In equal mixture, primary colours form white light. Secondary colours are cyan, magenta and yellow. These are opposite to the primary colours and each theoretically cancel out their opposite colour.

Recording in black & white provides a representation of a given colour, but instead of the colour being visible in the image, only the brightness or tonal value of the colour remains as a shade of grey or black or white. The range of tones that can be achieved in a black & white image is anything from black through various increasing tones of grey right up to pure white. The maximum purity of the white achievable depends on the base white of the paper that you are printing on.

Part of the art of black and white photography is to understand how the tonal value of colours in a scene will reproduce as a shade of grey or if they will appear as black or white. You may expect each colour to record as a different shade but some colours will reproduce as very similar shades even though the colours look completely different to the eye. Filters placed in front of a camera lens either enhance or reduce the coloured light passing through it and can further affect reproduction. Additionally the material you are recording the image onto and printing onto can also influence the final black & white image.

When using film, professional photographers are aware that each type of black and white film gives a different response to certain colours. Most reproduce a slightly different version of black and white and photographers have their personal favourites. More serious black and white photographers would also place colour filters in front of the lens to increase the contrast and change the tonal range of their image. The common colour filters applied for black & white film photography are deep red, an orange, a green or a yellow filter. But let’s face it, film is going the way of the Dodo and the computer has replaced the darkroom, so what are our options?

In today’s digital age we are now capturing images using sensors that only record in colour, if we want black and white we convert the image on a computer later. The level of success with this method largely depends on the conversion techniques you apply and your understanding of the colours in the scene. There are a variety of techniques that you can apply and each can yield a different result. It is worth noting however that although we are shooting on colour cameras it is still possible to influence the effect of the final black and white conversion at the capture stage by using filters.

Admittedly, having tested the technique of different colour filters on RGB capture, I would say the results vary in degree of success and in most cases with the right knowledge you can adjust an RGB colour image very precisely using good black and white conversion methods in your software. However I have had interesting results using a green filter on a colour digital camera and would also highly recommend using a polarising filter for most of your black and white landscape photography. Polarising filters increase the richness of colour and contrast in your image, which in turn means that your software has richer colour information to play with when making a black & white conversion.

But lets learn a bit about colour first.

Each opposite colour would cancel the other out – for example Red is the opposite colour of Cyan and Blue is the opposite colour of Yellow. Combining two of the primary colours forms the secondary colours. For example combining Red and Green light would create yellow. Combining Blue and Green light would create Cyan and combining Blue and Red would create Magenta. If you were to combine opposite colours you would create Black. If you combined all 3 primary colours you would create white light. If you combined all 3 secondary colours with subtractive mixing using optical filters you would create black.

As an experiment of black & white conversions, I photographed a series of test images using an RGB colour digital camera (with a CMOS sensor) but I also shot the scene with colour filters applied. The filters I used were the traditional colour filters used for black and white film and not designed for RGB capture, but I decided it would be an interesting exercise regardless.

1.A straight colour image with no filter
2.A straight colour image, with a Polarising filter
3.An Orange filter attached to the front of the lens
4.A Red filter
5.A Green filter
6.A Blue filter.

Each image was then loaded into Photoshop and converted to greyscale mode (the most simplistic method of creating a black & white image). I then decided to convert the original colour image (with no filters) using the black and white adjustment layer (a more versatile method of conversion) but this time manually adjusting the tonal range using the Photoshop colour sliders in the black and white conversion palette. In each case I was able to eventually achieve a very similar result to the standard greyscale conversions taken with the colour filters, therefore proving that using colour filters during RGB capture is rather futile.

It was, however, more difficult to achieve as good a result as the image taken using the polarising filter and I would also add that a straight black & white conversion from an RGB image with the green filter applied gave a more appealing starting point in this test. Further experimentation on different scenes at different times of day would be required to reveal any overall benefit.

Some digital SLRs have a monochrome mode where you can preview the image on the LCD screen in black & white. This capture mode is not a true black and white capture only a conversion preview of the colour file, but still useful for checking results when trying different filters for black and white.

In practical terms most of us will be shooting normal colour files in order to capture a good colour image and then wanting to make the best conversion possible. So let’s take a look at some of the techniques you could use in Photoshop CS4 to make good black and white conversions from a standard colour image.

The first and most obvious is to use a black and white adjustment layer, this will provide you a colour palette whereby you can adjust the brightness value of a given colour in your scene and reproduce it as a different shade of grey. By using the colour selector slider you can physically place your mouse on your image and slide it to see the effect on a given colour. When using this technique I like to make a separate copy of the colour image and keep it open on my desktop in another window as a reference to where certain colours are in the scene. By using an adjustment layer instead of an actual action you can flick the layer on and off to check your results.

Often you will find as you adjust your image colour values certain parts of the picture look better in black and white at one setting while other parts look better at another setting. If this is the case I create a new black and white layer for each of my favourite parts of the image and name the layer accordingly then rub through the layers afterwards to reveal the best part of each one.

The Channel Mixer adjustment layer can also be used for creating black and white images by checking the monochrome box and mixing the channels at various percentages to yield different results. In the tab at the top of the palette is a useful drop down menu that applies a similar effect to using the colour filters on black and white film that I mentioned earlier. Again creating new layers with different percentages and then blending the required areas can achieve more personalised results.

Another interesting technique that I learnt from a fellow photographer is to apply two Hue and Saturation layers to your image, set the top layer to the layer blend mode colour and set the saturation to “-100”. On the bottom layer you can then adjust the hue slider to recreate the effect of a multitude of colour filters in conjunction with the saturation slider. Again saving new flattened layers from your favourite results and blending them later.

With the new Camera Raw palette in CS4 (accessed through Bridge) you will find a greyscale conversion tab that offers a very versatile control panel with an additional tab for creating split tone images (sepia effects etc.) On the greyscale conversion palette there are more colour sliders than the black & white adjustment option in Photoshop (don’t ask me why?) these extra sliders give you slightly more versatility in your conversion but you are unable to work on layered files and are restricted to working with a flattened tiff, jpeg or RAW file.

Other tips you might find useful with practise are to create a gradient map on top of your black and white conversion allowing you to map a specific tonal range over the whole image by pre-selecting which tone you want to go where – this can be useful for adding a boost of contrast to parts of your image by history brushing away areas you don’t require or if you applied this is an adjustment layer you could apply a mask to select the areas you wish to retain and remove.

To fully understand this process I advise you read about layer masks and gradient mapping in Photoshop and related manuals.

For a final contrast boost to your black and white conversions I find the Unsharp Mask filter at a setting of about 20/50 (for a 22MegaPixel Image) very effective, then use the edit > fade slider to adjust the image to suit. A setting of 15 percent and 20 pixels would be more appropriate on a 12MP camera.

Finally and most importantly don’t forget that all of the above is totally irrelevant if the image you have captured doesn’t work. I don’t believe a bad colour image will be miraculously saved by converting it to black and white! Black and white photography is still photography and capturing a creative image is still key.

Guide To Good Wedding Photography

by admin

It’s your wedding, one of the most beautiful days in your life. How else can you make the perfect occasion last? Capture the momentous event with great wedding photographs. Read this guide to make sure you choose the right wedding photography service for your big day.

The first thing to do is to give the most opportunities for the photographer when scheduling activities during the wedding day. When planning the time of the wedding ceremony and of the reception, couples should incorporate the time that the photographer requires to capture all of the couple’s special moments. There should be a gap between the end of the ceremony and beginning of the reception, to allow for more photographs for the bride, groom and wedding entourage, especially if they are in two different locations. The photographers and subjects will have a more relaxed shoot and will enjoy all the parts of the wedding if the events are well spaced out.

Next, think of important factors when selecting a wedding photographer. The photographer should be able to show more than one complete set of wedding photos. Couples should not accept someone who shows only selected prints of their best photographs from different weddings. Ideally, all photographs from 3 to 4 complete wedding sets that are at least satisfactory should be a criterion of a professional wedding photographer.

It is also good to have a photographer that gives a package with unlimited coverage for the whole day. Again, this way, photography will not be rushed.

Next, try to be aware of photography companies or individuals that contract out jobs to a pool of wedding photographers or even freelancers. Salespersons often pose as actual photographers and try to woo customers. Make sure companies deal openly, and ask them to show 3 to 4 complete weddings from each of the photographers they offer you, so you can choose. Make sure the one chosen is the one that will cover your wedding. Otherwise, it is better to find a photographer that personally shoots weddings. A two-person team is an even better package because two points of view of the wedding can be taken.

Some photographers only offer the traditional wedding photography style, or strictly a photojournalistic style. It is best to find a versatile photographer that can do both.

Miniature Chu-ke nu Chinese Repeating Crossbow is now FOR SALE!

by admin

The Chinese repeating crossbow. Quite a legend. Online research shows that it originates to the 4th century.
A very famous Chinese strategist, Zhuge Liang (226-481 AD) is believed to have “upgraded” an earlier design from a tomb dating 4th Century BC.
This new design was able to fire multiple arrows (bolts) in succession, was last used in mass formations which helped shape the China-Japan war of 1894. It was named after Zhuge because of his improvements. You can see it spelled a couple of different ways; or “Chu-ke nu” or “Chu-ko-nu”, the first being correct. It literally means “Zhuge Crossbow”

The weapons were very common among the Manchurian troops, and can be seen in photographs from that era.

It was introduce to the Koreans in 1418, and was given the name “sunogung”. Everyone seems to be impressed by it’s mechanism and ease of firing. This rapid firing design is why it was so impressive.

Even though it has a short range, the owner of the weapon would dip the bolts into poison. So even if an enemy were to be hit by a bolt, and not suffer a mortal wound from the bolt itself, the poison would work it’s way into the bloodstream and inevitably end their life with a “slight delay”.

In China, the crossbow revolutionized the war. The warriors would line up and fire multiple bolts at riders on horseback as a fist strike. Because of the rapid fire mechanism of the Chu-ke nu, it was used as the “first strike” defense in close combat situations.

What I like about firing the miniature Chinese Repeating Crossbow is the sound and feel of the bolt leaving the chamber. You can load 6 to 7 bolts, and the firing mechanism is just “push forward and pull back”.

Other people who first fire one will do it slowly, thinking that it needs time to load the next bolt. This is not so! Once they have been exposed to how fast it can fire, the fun begins. The accuracy is good too.

In conclusion, the Chinese Repeating Crossbow, often called the Chu-ke nu, has been around for a long time. The actual detail that goes into the design and assembly of the crossbow is what gives this weapon it’s uniqueness.

Anyone who has fired the Chu-ke nu and realized how fun it is, usually asks the same question: “Where can I get one?” ScanzonCraft, makers of fine wood products, in association with have answered that question – THEY do!

Harmony Kingdom Discount Collectibles

It was at Martin and Corinna’s previous property, a garden shed a little distance away from Weaver’s Cottage where the unique small boxes ended up being created. Weaver’s Cottage is situated among the steeply sloping hills of Chalford, a small village dating back to around 1842. From the garden shed is a beautiful panorama of the adjoining Cotswold country. It really is in this simple place where Martin started to design the box collectible figurines. It was back in 1989 with Martin’s only focus being to earn a minimal salary to support his small family.

For the era, the production process was a bit ambitious so a firm in Somerset performed the moulding and casting, Martin would then tint and hand-paint every piece himself. His “assembly line” was on a simple table where he had number of pre-cast pieces. These pieces became his income once there were sold in nearby shops and local flea markets. For these early pieces, his older brother contributed to the sales effort. of the , animal piles and netsuke reproductions. What are now known as the Large Treasure Jests were also sold to eager buyers.

In these early times, many of Peter’s carvings did not reach production as Martin still had much to learn about the complexities of the manufacturing process. One of his first attempts at a more complex design was the “Punk Rock Hedgehog.” However, it became obvious that getting the castings cleanly out of the moulds was a particularly difficult thing to do. Also, polishing the spines was proved to be impractical. It turns out that a few rare pieces still exist, but in a somewhat imperfect condition.

Since Martin could fit more of the smaller parts on his worktable, he began put more effort into what are now typically called the “Small Treasure Jests”. His first box figurine was small and carved by Peter was “Forty Winks”. It was a smaller version of “Sunnyside Up” that was completed in the Spring of 1992. Peter followed that up with by “Princely Thoughts” about a month later which was a miniature variation of “Awaiting A Kiss”. It wasn’t long after that, that he started studying journalism, so Martin began to create Michael Tandy’s “Who’d A Thought and the interesting “The Ram”.

As a general rule, If you would like to obtain a particular style of figurine, you will want the seller to show the designs and his list to your liking. Additionally it is crucial to designate how big your figurine should be prior to placing the buy order over the Internet. Images and photographs of collectible figurines online will often be not be truly representative of the specific measurements. The figurines often seem bigger than the specific measurements.

Another idea is to collect special figurines that evoke personal emotions and memories such as an angel figurine. They might be a bit more pricey since they are custom produced based on your specification. A current angel style figurine can come in a variety of materials and shapes, so you will want to be sure to specify the material and other features that you would like the angel or maybe a fairy figurine to have. Also manufacture in various styles and dimensions, fairy figurines can be fun to collect. This can complement your collection of Harmony Kingdom designs.

A collection of Harmony Kingdom and other figurines can be of significant value which you will to pass on to your children. If you select wisely, collectible figurines normally gain in value as the years go by. You might be surprised to learn that there is a methodology to collecting figurines. As you get more interested in the hobby of collecting figurines you will find more to learn. That is what makes collecting fun.

The Disney Company and Harmony Kingdom premiered their initial collaborative figurine as a depiction from the 2001 Pixar film, Monsters, Inc. It was a large five inch wide box figurine that portrayed the huge, blue-furred James “Sulley” Sullivan. It also included the two year old baby Boo with Sulley’s one-eyed assistant Mike Wazowski. The figurines represent a special tender moment in the Pixar movie. It is a must have figurine set for Disney fans as well as a special example of the “Magic” by one of the veteran Disney sculptors, Robert King.

The Various Types Of Photography And How To Build Your Photography Skills

by admin

photography skillPhotographers are in no short supply nowadays. People tend to think that just because you can make camera click and flash then you are a photographer. This cannot be any farther from the actual case. Cameras are in no short supply but the same cannot be said about photographers. Becoming a skillful photographer takes quite a lot of practice and attendance of photography workshops plus signing up to various photography programs. If you have a dream of becoming a photographer, well you are most welcome into the world of photography. There is a lot for you to do, just make sure that you stand out from the crowd.

Types of photography careers

There are just so many areas that you can specialize in as a photographer. You can think of yourself as a doctor or a lawyer who is able to practice different forms of their trade only that your tool is a camera. Some of the most popular forms of photography include:

Fashion photography

You have probably seen this on the popular reality TV shows dealing with fashion such as Americas Next Top Model and such. Fashion photographers do more than just taking snaps of the models during the photo shoots. High fashion photography will definitely involve a lot of this but you will also have to drop by the fashion shows and capture some snaps of the models on the runways and even take photos of outfits while in the market.

However, becoming a high fashion photographer can be quite a process. You need to make sure that you work extremely hard to get your work noticed in the impossibly competitive fashion industry. Once you are at the top then your life will be a little bit easier for you.

Newborn, maternity and family photography

There is nothing as difficult in photography as taking photos of newborns and children in general. They are very hyper running all over. When they are settle down it can be hard to make them smile so that you can take that amazing photo that will make everyone coo in amazement. The same is the case with family portraits. You need to develop quite a skill if you want to be able to capture the perfect family moment easily.

Aerial photography

Just as the name might suggest, aerial photography is all about taking pictures from about the ground. There are very many ways of taking these snaps. Some people use drones that carry the camera above the ground. There are others who take helicopters and physically go up to take the photographs. Aerial photography is quite expensive but very rewarding as you will discover when you attend some photography workshops.

Nature, wildlife and landscape photography

There are people who have made it their business to take snaps of the most outstanding things that they come across. In the making of documentaries, such photography becomes very useful. You need someone who can take a photo of that bewitching landscape, stunning birds and fierce wild animals in all their beauty.

Becoming an outstanding photographer

Having a skill and a having a passion for photographer are two different things. There are people who love taking photographs but they do not have the skill at all. You can become an outstanding photographer by:

Practicing a lot- carry your camera with you everywhere you go; you never know who or what you will meet
Study other peoples works
Learn to work with different lighting conditions
Sign up to the numerous photography programs that exist nowadays
Share your work with the rest of the world- you can create a photo blog or something of the sort and work with it.
